Faulty Auto-Trim
Possibly at Fault in Incident Resulting in Death of Prominent Passenger The National Transportation Safety Board has released a report indicating an abrupt nose-up attitude aboard a Bombardier Challenger 300 was a factor in the death of a passenger aboard the aircraft on March 3rd. According to the report, the pilots were reacting to a series of alerts in the annuciator panel after the aircraft departed Dillant/Hopkins Airport (KEEN) in Keene, New Hampsire enroute to Leesburg, Virginia. A passenger on board, Dana Hyde, who served as an attorney for both Bill Clinton and Barack Obama when they were in the White House, was killed in the incident. It is unclear in the report how Ms. Hyde died, but it speculated she may have been fatally injured as the plane experienced several "Gs" during an abrupt nose-up maneuver that occured when a pilot disengaged the auto-trim system in response to one of the alerts onboard. After the in-flight incident, the pilots were informed of Ms. Hude's injuries. They diverted to Bradley International Airport in Hartford, Connecticut, where she was transported to a hospital where she later died. This was not the only incident the flight experienced. The takeoff was aborted initially when it was discovered the pitot tube cover had not been removed, an action normally accomplished during the preflight inspection phase. |
